About the axolotl plush

The axolotl plush, and why people want one

The axolotl is a fascinating creature — a salamander that never grows up, with feathery external gills and a permanent half-smile. That smile is most of the reason an axolotl plush works at all. We captured the natural shape in a long, flat-bellied pillow with six gill fronds, so the whole animal reads from across a room and wins hearts before anyone picks it up.

Pink, blue and dragon fruit

Our pink axolotl is the closest to the leucistic animal people picture first, and pink is still the colour most people are looking for. The blue one we invented and then could not stop making. The dragon fruit version — kawaii pitaya, green gills on a speckled pink body — began as a one-off and turned into a unique staple of the collection.

Two lengths

At 19.6" it is a lap-sized plush that sits on a bed without taking the bed over. At 34" it becomes a body pillow: long enough to put an arm over, soft enough to put a head on. Both lengths share the same gill construction and the same soft PP cotton fill.

Built for animal enthusiasts of all ages

Axolotl plush animals land with kids and with adults who love the real creatures. We finish the gills with a stiffer core so they keep their frill, and leave the belly unquilted so it squishes flat under a hand. It is a charming, slightly whimsical design, and a delightful thing to hand to someone who has been reading about axolotls for a month.

How to pick one

  • 19.6 inches is a hugging plush, 34 inches is a body pillow — there is no middle here.
  • Pink and purple are the lifelike ones, dragon fruit is the loud one.
  • Pick a squeeze axolotl if the point is fidgeting rather than cuddling.

Sizes on this shelf

We measure end to end along the longest line, lying flat and unstretched, so a figure here is the whole plush and not how tall it stands when it sits. This shelf runs 19.6", 34". If two sizes are close in price and the plush is going to be slept with, take the larger one.

What it is made of

Short brushed pile over a tight knit backing, filled with high-quality PP cotton blown in at an even density from nose to tail. Seams are turned to the inside, eyes and details are embroidered or sewn rather than glued, and every finished plush gets squeezed once before it is boxed.

Looking after it

Spot clean with a damp cloth and mild soap for everyday marks. Hand wash cool when it needs more, press the water out between towels instead of wringing, and dry flat for a day or two. Never a tumble dryer — heat is the one thing that permanently flattens plush fur. Brush with a soft brush once dry and the fluff comes back.

Questions about axolotl plush

Why are the axolotls so long?

Because an axolotl is long. We drew them to the animal's proportions rather than squashing them into a round plush shape, which is why the 34-inch one reads as a body pillow and not a toy.

What is the dragon fruit colourway?

Deep pink body with a paler belly and darker frills, named after the fruit rather than any real axolotl. The pink and purple ones are closer to the animal.

Can you squeeze them?

The squeeze axolotls are stuffed softer than the pillows on purpose — they are meant to be squashed flat and come back.
