About the long plush pillows

What a long plush pillow is for

These are stuffed animals shaped like bolsters. You put one along the edge of a bed, under a knee, across a lap during a film, or behind your back on a sofa that is a little too deep. They work as toys and they work as furniture, which is why we keep adding animals to the line.

Choosing a length

Under 20" is a lap pillow. Between 25" and 35" is the length most people mean by "long" — it spans a pillow and a half. Past 40" you are into full body pillow territory; our 51.1" long duck and 47.2" dachshund are both in that range and both need a double bed to look normal.

The animals we stretch

Long cats in black, grey, beige and calico. Long ducks in yellow. A giraffe and a dinosaur at 35.4". Dachshunds, which were already long. Persimmon capybaras, which were not. And a line of pickles, because somebody on the team asked for a cucumber and we could not think of a reason to say no.

Fill, seams and sleeping on them

Long shapes sag if you fill them wrong. We pack these with PP cotton at a slightly higher density than our round plush toys so the middle does not collapse when the ends are supported. Seams run along the belly rather than the back, so the side you lie on stays smooth.

How to pick one

  • Measure the bed or sofa first, then pick the length. This is the one shelf where guessing goes wrong.
  • Cats and ducks are round in section; the dinosaur and giraffe are flatter and stack better.
  • If it is going under a knee or a back, take the 34-inch rather than the 51.

Sizes on this shelf

We measure end to end along the longest line, lying flat and unstretched, so a figure here is the whole plush and not how tall it stands when it sits. This shelf runs 16", 17.7", 19.6", 23.6", 25", 27.5", 31.5", 32.2". If two sizes are close in price and the plush is going to be slept with, take the larger one.

What it is made of

Short brushed pile over a tight knit backing, filled with high-quality PP cotton blown in at an even density from nose to tail. Seams are turned to the inside, eyes and details are embroidered or sewn rather than glued, and every finished plush gets squeezed once before it is boxed.

Looking after it

Spot clean with a damp cloth and mild soap for everyday marks. Hand wash cool when it needs more, press the water out between towels instead of wringing, and dry flat for a day or two. Never a tumble dryer — heat is the one thing that permanently flattens plush fur. Brush with a soft brush once dry and the fluff comes back.

Questions about long plush pillows

How long is too long?

For a single bed, 34 inches. For a sofa, 51 inches is the one that looks deliberate. Past that you are buying a piece of furniture and should measure the room.

Do they sag in the middle?

Not if the fill density is even, which is the main thing we get right on the long ones. A long plush pillow that sags has been padded at the head and skimped in the body.

Can I use one as a pregnancy pillow?

People do, and the length works, but a plush pillow is softer than a support pillow and will not hold a position for you.
