Bird Plush
Small bird plush toys — pigeon, cockatiel, kingfisher, great tit, white-eye and a chick. Palm-sized, with the markings in the right places.
About the bird plush
Birds, as birds
Most bird plush toys are a yellow blob with a beak. Ours are patterned on actual species: the grey shoulder bars of a pigeon, the orange cheek of a cockatiel, the blue back and rust belly of a kingfisher, the black cap and white face of a great tit, the green and the eye-ring of a white-eye.
Palm-sized on purpose
They are all small enough to close a hand around. Birders buy them for other birders, which was not the plan but is now most of what this shelf does. They sit on a monitor, a windowsill or a car dashboard without falling over.
Soft shell, light fill
Short plush shell, light PP cotton fill, weighted base so the bird stands. No hard parts, no glued eyes on the smallest sizes.
A quiet gift
A bird plush is a small, specific present — it says you noticed which bird somebody likes. That makes it an easy gift for people who are hard to buy for.
How to pick one
- Life-size pigeon for the joke, hugging-size chick for a child.
- Check for a squeaker if the plush is going to a toddler who likes noise.
Sizes on this shelf
We measure end to end along the longest line, lying flat and unstretched, so a figure here is the whole plush and not how tall it stands when it sits. This shelf runs one size. If two sizes are close in price and the plush is going to be slept with, take the larger one.
What it is made of
Short brushed pile over a tight knit backing, filled with high-quality PP cotton blown in at an even density from nose to tail. Seams are turned to the inside, eyes and details are embroidered or sewn rather than glued, and every finished plush gets squeezed once before it is boxed.
Looking after it
Spot clean with a damp cloth and mild soap for everyday marks. Hand wash cool when it needs more, press the water out between towels instead of wringing, and dry flat for a day or two. Never a tumble dryer — heat is the one thing that permanently flattens plush fur. Brush with a soft brush once dry and the fluff comes back.
Questions about bird plush
Are these to scale with real birds?
The pigeon and the cockatiel are close to life size, which is why people keep buying them as jokes for birdwatchers. The rest are sized for hugging.
Do any of them make a sound?
A few of the small ones squeak. The card name says so when they do.
